The fish is fried in a batter and chips is another name for fried potatoes. Real British chips are big and chunky, not small and thin. They are not the ‘French fries’ that you see in American burger restaurants. People often think fish and chips are originally from Britain. However, fried potatoes originate from 17 th century France and Belgium. That’s where the name ‘French fries’ come from. It’s easy to find places where you can try fish and chips. The next time you’re in Britain why not visit a ‘chippy’? ‘Chippy’ is a short name for a ‘fish and chip shop’. There are about 11,000 of them in Britain, and every town has at least one! A lot of families have takeaway fish and chips on Friday nights. Usually people eat their fish and chips with lots of salt and vinegar. You can also have them with mushy peas – they taste d
